Description
Westdene is a large, asymmetrical villa located at 506 Perth Road in Dundee, designed by Watson and Salmond from Glasgow and dated 1903. The building is constructed from snecked and stugged ashlar and features a simply-detailed, two-storey design.
On the south elevation, there are four bays with mullioned and transomed windows above a blind basement. From the left, there is a canted gabled bay with the ground floor's three-light mullions and transoms removed. The centre left section has tripartite windows that are transomed at the ground level, while the centre right section is advanced and features four-light windows on each floor with a steep gable above. The right bay includes a three-light window on the ground floor and a cross window with a gabletted head on the first floor.
The north elevation showcases a Tudor basket-arched door with a dated panel beneath a stepped hoodmould, positioned at the canted angle of the advanced gable. Above this door is a bipartite window and a crenellated parapet. There is also a transomed stair window with a triple-light design in the gable, a smaller door under a stepped hoodmould to the left, and a gabled bay to the right.
The villa is topped with slate roofs that have overhanging eaves and features ashlar ridge stacks. The north side has casement windows, most of which retain their original leaded panes, while the south side has sash and case windows, including two-paned sash and case windows, with one window altered.
The property is enclosed by pagoda-capped gatepiers and a wrought-iron gate, with a boundary wall that steps over a pedestrian gate.
