Description

Ardvreck is a villa located at 516 Perth Road in Dundee, designed by Mills and Shepherd between 1907 and 1909. This long, asymmetrical building features a stepped plan with two storeys, an attic, and a basement, constructed from rock-faced rubble with ashlar dressings.

On the south elevation, all windows are mullioned and transomed, linked by cill courses. To the left, there is a two-storey canted bay, while the second bay features a gabled section with a slightly canted ground floor window. The third bay has a semi-circular arched garden entrance with a deeply inset door that has altered glazing above a tripartite window. The fourth bay showcases a three-storey, five-light mullioned and transomed bow, and the fifth bay is set back with irregular fenestration and a gable, along with a re-entrant angle turret that has a pyramidal roof and is corbelled out from the first floor. There are also two later small-paned dormers and a two-storey piend-roofed service wing set well back. A buttressed garden wall with a square balustrade and a dog-legged stair is located to the left of the bow.

The north elevation features a square, projecting tower with a pyramidal roof on the west side, which includes a large mullioned and transomed leaded glass stair window and an off-centre entrance beneath an armorial. The porch has an ornate wrought-iron grille, but the window is blocked by a later outside stair. A set-back bay to the right is blind, except for a quarter-circular turret in the re-entrant. The service wing is advanced to the left and gabled, with an off-centre stack and a modern projection. The building has ashlar stacks, piended and gabled swept slate roofs, and lead caps on the turrets, although some ornate finials have been removed. The windows are sash and case, with four-pane upper cases and single-pane lower cases on the south elevation.

The boundary wall along Perth Road is semi-cylindrical, featuring conical-capped gatepiers.
