Description
Arthurlie, located at 19 South Avenue in Paisley, is a villa built in 1907. This two-storey and attic building features three bays, a corniced polygonal angle tower, mock half-timbering, and a single-storey wing. It is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and chamfered arrises.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a central bay at ground level with steps and flanking dwarf walls leading to a deep-set two-leaf timber door. This door is topped with a plate glass fanlight and a relief carved doorhead that displays the date. To the right of the door is a narrow light with coloured leaded glass, while a small window is located to the left. Similar slightly offset windows are found on the first floor, and there is a broad flat-roofed four-light dormer above. To the left, a canted bay features three windows on each floor, transitioning into a jettied half-timbered gablehead with a small tripartite window. A slightly advanced blank bay to the right of the centre rises into a shouldered stack, with the angle tower beyond.
The southwest tower has a battered base leading to an engaged four-sided angle tower, which includes a window on each face at both floors and a deep cornice topped with a finialled polygonal roof.
The southeast elevation showcases a broad advanced gable to the right, featuring a five-light canted window on each floor and a half-timbered jettied gablehead with a small tripartite window. A single window is located immediately to the left at ground level, with the angle tower to the outer left.
The north elevation presents a variety of elements, including a projecting single-storey wing, which was formerly used as a laundry or ancillary space. This wing has a louvered opening to the right and a small window that breaks the eaves into a timbered dormer head, with an adjacent small stack on the return to the right.
The villa is adorned with four- and six-pane timber sash and case windows, featuring a leaded glazing pattern on the upper sashes over plate glass lower sashes, and a multi-pane glazing pattern on the dormers. The roof is covered with red tiles, and the coped ashlar stacks have cans. The overhanging eaves are complemented by plain bargeboarding, and there are cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.
Inside, there is a screen door with figurative coloured glass and a timber staircase.
