Description

Glenarm is a villa dating from 1900, designed by W D McLennan. It is a two-storey, four-bay building characterised by mock half-timbered gables, a conical-roofed circular tower, a first-floor balcony, and a fine interior. The exterior is constructed of harl (roughcast) with red brick, red-painted dressings, and tile-hung aprons. Timber transoms and mullions are prominent.

The north (principal) elevation features a broad gabled bay to the left, with a broad brick pilaster at the centre, flanked by canted six-light transomed windows and tiled aprons to the ground floor. Similar tripartite windows are positioned on the first floor beneath a jettied gablehead. Recessed bays to the right incorporate a canopied brick porch, a set-back two-leaf panelled timber door with a small square bipartite window to the right, and a horizontal four-light stair window breaking the eaves, alongside a full-height brick chimney breast. A lower bay extends to the outer right, featuring a swept-roof eight-light transomed window at the outer angle.

The south elevation is distinguished by a decorative cast-iron finial to the circular tower on the outer left, with five windows on each floor. The centre features two tall transomed windows (eight-light to the left and twelve-light to the right), a timber balcony, and two four-light windows on the first floor. A lower, advanced gable is found on the outer right, with a variety of openings.

The west elevation is dominated by a gable to the left of centre, with a swept-roof eight-light transomed window at the low outer left angle, and a small bipartite window to the left on the first floor. A full-height brick chimney breast terminates the right pitch near the centre. The circular tower (as noted on the south elevation) is located on the outer right.

The east elevation is asymmetrically fenestrated, incorporating a centre gable with a full-height shouldered brick stack to the left (truncated at eaves) and three closely-aligned narrow lights in the gablehead.

The windows are a mix of two- and four-pane glazing patterns over plate glass glazing in timber sash and case/casement windows, with plate glass also used in smaller casement windows. Leaded coloured glass is found in the stair window and the small ground floor bipartite window on the north side. The roof is covered in red tiles with scalloped terracotta ridge tiles. Chimney stacks are flat-coped brick with cans. There are overhanging eaves with swept studded bargeboarding.

The interior retains a good decorative scheme, featuring corniced architraved doors. A screen door with leaded coloured glass leads to an octagonal vestibule and a panelled hall with a fireplace under a timber-balustered dog-leg staircase. Original fireplaces are present with a variety of timber surrounds and overmantels, with the exception of the drawing room.

The property is enclosed by coped harled boundary walls, circular gatepiers, and timber gates.
