Description

Redcroft, located at 432 Blackness Road in Dundee, is a large two-storey house built in 1898 by Leslie Ower, showcasing the Arts and Crafts style with its red ashlar construction. The south elevation is asymmetrical with three bays; the right bay is advanced, featuring a ground floor with a 1-3-1 window arrangement and a first floor with a mock half-timbered gable and two small windows with modern glazing. To the left, there is a ground floor verandah and a modern conservatory added at the center, along with a stained glass screen and a slate roof that has projecting eaves over the advanced tripartite window on the left. The first floor has single and bipartite windows with gablet heads that break the eaves.

There is a near-contemporary one-storey west wing that includes a canted bay and a semi-conical roof. The north and west elevations feature steep swept gables, with half-timbering at the attic level and varied fenestration below. The main entrance is through a timber porch located in the chamfered northwest angle. The slightly later west and east service wings have been added, and the stair window has been altered to accommodate a new outside stair and door to the top flat. A low two-storey service wing is situated at the northeast, featuring piended dormers. The windows are primarily 9- or 12-pane upper sashes with single pane lower sections. The roofs are gabled and piended, covered in red tiles with terracotta finials, and there are four prominent battered ashlar stacks.

Inside, the original stair remains intact on the first floor and in the attic. The vestibule features a mosaic, and there is a panelled ceiling in the hall along with carved fireplaces. The west wing has plaster cavetto ceilings, possibly in a billiard room. The property is enclosed by rubble-built boundary walls that include cylindrical gatepiers topped with conical caps.
