Description

The Western Cemetery and Gates, located at 315 Perth Road in Dundee, were designed by James R Findlater around 1840 and later extended to the north by Patrick Findlater, with plans dated 1868 and completed subsequently.

The entrance features a symmetrical Tudor Gothic design, showcasing symbols of mortality. It includes a four-centred arched gateway set between octagonal piers topped with domed caps, one of which was destroyed by lightning. The parapet rises to a central statue of an angel. On either side of the gateway are four-centred arched pedestrian entrances, flanked by buttresses and arched inset inscription panels, topped with draped urn finials. The square-section end piers are adorned with winged souls and openwork crowns, and the gates are made of wrought and cast iron.

The boundary wall along Perth Road is low and constructed from ashlar with a vermiculated base, while the higher walls to the sides and rear are built from rubble.

The South Lodge, located at 2 Grosvenor Road at the corner of Perth and Grosvenor Roads, was also designed by Findlater around 1840. The east gable was realigned for road improvements in the 1870s. This lodge is a one-storey and attic structure with a three-bay ashlar south front, featuring four-centred arched windows and shallow panelled buttresses that divide the bays. It has a dentil cornice and curved angles. The entrance on the east gable is under a stepped hoodmould and is flanked by single windows. The roof is slate with twin round-headed dormers and gable-end stacks, and the windows are sash and case with a two-pane upper case.

The later North Lodge, located at 4 Grosvenor Road at the corner of Grosvenor Road and Rockfield Crescent, is an L-plan structure with a porch in the re-entrant angle. It features hoodmoulded windows, skewputts, and gable stacks, along with slate roofs that have fish-scale bands and a wrought-iron finial. The windows are also sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern, and there are square vermiculated gatepiers with modern gates leading to Grosvenor Road.

The cemetery includes several mausolea, which are actually tool stores, positioned at the northeast and northwest corners of the original cemetery. These structures have ashlar fronts, rubble sides, and single four-centred arched doors with wrought-iron gates. The buttressed angles, similar to the original lodge, feature lion masks and a stepped parapet.

The cemetery is notable for its collection of Victorian and later monuments.
