Description

A pair of terraced townhouses at 20-22 Montagu Square, London, dating to approximately 1810-11. They were designed by J.T. Parkinson as part of his Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have concealed slate roofs. Number 20 is four storeys high, while numbers 21 and 22 are five storeys, all above basements. Each front is three windows wide.

The left-hand side of each house features a semicircular arched doorway with a panelled door, accompanied by inset Greek Doric columns forming an entablature above the door. Numbers 20 and 21 retain patterned fanlights above their doorways. Each house has a two-window segmental bow on the ground floor; the bow of number 21 is continued in stucco, featuring three sash windows across the first and second floors, finished with a cornice and blocking course. Number 22 has a mid-19th century stucco canted bay on its first floor, above the ground floor bow. The remaining windows are recessed sash windows, most with glazing bars, and are set beneath flat, gauged arches. A plat band defines the top of the stucco work on the ground floor. Number 20 has a stone-coped parapet, while numbers 21 and 22 have a crowning stucco cornice and blocking course. A continuous cast iron balcony with a lattice pattern is located in front of the first-floor windows, and cast iron area railings are present, topped with acorn finials.
