Description

Nos. 50 and 51 Montagu Square are a pair of terraced town houses built around 1810 to 1811 by J.T. Parkinson as part of the Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate. The houses are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have concealed slate roofs. They are four storeys high, with basements, and have three-window frontages. The right-hand side features semicircular arched doorways with inset Greek Doric columns, panelled doors, entablature doorheads, and patterned fanlights. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, most with glazing bars, set within flat, gauged arches. A plat band runs along the top of the stucco ground floor. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course tops the facade. A continuous balcony with bracketed, cast iron, geometric patterning runs along the first floor. Cast iron area railings are present, finished with acorn finials. The group value of the houses lies in their contribution to the architectural homogeneity and historical significance of Montagu Square.
