Description
No. 40 Montagu Square is a terraced town house built around 1810-1811, with some alterations from the mid-19th century. It was designed by J.T. Parkinson as part of the Montagu-Bryanston Square development. The building is constructed of stock brick with a stucco ground floor and has a concealed slate roof. It stands five storeys tall with a basement and is three windows wide.
On the left side, there is a semicircular arched doorway featuring a panelled door set in moulded jambs, topped with a fanlight. The ground floor includes a two-window segmental bow, above which is a mid-19th century stucco canted bay that rises two storeys and is finished with a cornice and blocking course. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, which are set under flat gauged brick arches. A plat band marks the finish of the ground floor stuccowork, while a crowning stucco cornice and blocking course complete the top of the building. A continuous cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern adorns the first floor, and there are cast iron area railings with urn finials.
