Description

Nos. 33 and 34 Montagu Square are a pair of terraced town houses dating from approximately 1810-11, designed by J.T. Parkinson as part of his development for the Portman Estate. The construction is in stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor, and they have a concealed slate roof. The houses extend over five storeys and have basements. No. 33 is two windows wide, aligning with the square, and has a four-window north return. No. 34 has a three-window front.

The entrance to No. 33 is located in the north return, featuring a panelled door with pilaster jambs and a fanlight, sheltered by a Doric stucco porch. No. 34 features a semicircular arched doorway on the left side, incorporating a panelled door, fluted jambs, and a patterned fanlight. Both houses have two-window segmental bows to the ground floor. Above this, the first floor of No. 34 features canted bays with cornices and blocking courses, while No. 33 has recessed sash windows under flat gauged arches constructed of red brick; the north return of No. 33 includes blind windows. A plat band finishes off the ground floor stuccowork. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course runs along the top. Continuous cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern adorn the first floors. Cast iron area railings are fitted, topped with acorn finials.
