Description
A pair of identical terraced houses located on Upper Montagu Street in London, dating from approximately 1810 to 1820. They were built as part of the Portman Estate development designed by J.T. Parkinson’s plan for Montagu Square. The houses are constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco finish to the ground floor, and have a concealed slate roof. They are four storeys high, with a basement level. Each house has two windows wide. Doorways are on the left side and feature panelled doors with fanlights above. The ground floor has canted bay windows with three sash lights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows with glazing bars, each set under a flat, gauged arch. A continuous cast iron balcony runs around the bay windows and over the doorways on the first floor. The building is topped by a stucco cornice and a blocking course. Original cast iron area railings are present, with urn finials. The houses are listed for their group value within the streetscape.
