Description

This is an end-of-terrace corner house with a shop, dating to approximately 1811-1823. It was built as part of John Parkinson's development of Montagu Square and Upper Montagu Street. The building is constructed of stock brick, with the ground floor of Upper Montagu Street channelled in stucco. It has a slate roof. The building rises four storeys plus a basement, and features a mid-20th century dormered mansard roof. It is three windows wide to Crawford Street, with two windows grouped to the left. There is a single-window return with a house entrance to Upper Montagu Street.

The mid-Victorian shop front has an arcaded design, incorporating three thin mullioned bays of display window to the right and a recessed entrance with a panelled and glazed door and one display bay to the left. Panelled risers lead to consoles which support a narrow fascia with gilded glass panels for lettering, topped by decorative ironwork cresting. The upper floors have recessed sash windows with glazing bars, set under flat, gauged red brick arches. A stone cornice and blocking course is returned to Upper Montagu Street. The front of the house to Upper Montagu Street has a semicircular arched doorway with a recessed panelled door in a reeded architrave, fitted with a fanlight and sash windows to each floor above. Cast iron area railings are topped with urn finials.

The corner of the building has wrought iron scrollwork supporting a large Victorian chemist's lamp with coloured glass and a domed finial at the level of the shop fascia. The building is included on the list for group value only.
