Description

The Duke of Wellington Public House is an end-of-terrace building constructed between 1811 and 1823, with alterations made around 1850 to 1860. It was built as part of J. Parkinson's development of Wyndham Place and Bryanston Square. The building features a stock brick side facing Wyndham Place and a stuccoed front on Crawford Street, with a concealed slate roof. It stands four storeys tall with a basement on Wyndham Place and has four windows across the front on Crawford Street, along with a one-bay return to Wyndham Place.

The ground floor, dating from the mid-19th century, has a public house front that includes double doors on the left and three bays of bar windows with panelled risers. This is framed by panelled pilasters supporting an entablature-fascia decorated with egg and dart motifs and a dentilled cornice, along with enriched console brackets on either side. The upper floors feature sash windows set in shallow architraves, with pediments on the first floor and cornices on the second floor. The top floor has two central blind windows. A crowning cornice and blocking course complete the design. The return side has one glazing bar sash window under a flat gauged arch on each floor. The property is also enhanced by cast iron area railings with arrowhead designs and urn finials. It occupies an important corner site at Wyndham Place.
