Description

The St Marleybone Western National School is a former parish school built in 1824, with some alterations. It is constructed of stock brick with painted stone dressings and has a concealed slate roof, displaying slight Greek Revival details. The building has three storeys and a basement, featuring an entrance bay flanked by single bay advanced pavilions and a nine-window return to York Street.

The central entrance has a large former doorway framed by a stone architrave, supported by console brackets beneath a block cornice. Above this, there is a semicircular arched recessed sash window on the first floor and a stone pedimented tablet at the second floor level inscribed "St. Mary-le-Bone Western National Schools 1824". The flanking pavilions each have two-storey semicircular arched recesses with semicircular arched windows at the first floor level; the left-hand window is blocked, while the right-hand has been adapted into two windows. The second floor features recessed tripartite sashes within architrave surrounds.

The building has a stone plinth and a first-floor plat band that is interrupted by the arched recesses, which are adorned with moulded stone impost bands. The parapet has coping at the centre and shallow stone pediments on the pavilions. The return section, which has been lowered from four to three storeys, contains recessed glazing bar sashes under flat gauged arches. Additionally, there are cast iron area railings with acorn heads and egg-shaped finials.
