Description

No. 49 York Street is a corner terraced house dating from around 1810 to 1820, and built as part of the Portman Estate development around Montagu Square, associated with the work of J.T. Parkinson. The house is constructed of stock brick with a stuccoed ground floor, topped by a concealed slate roof. It is four storeys high, with a basement, and four windows wide, two of which are blind. There is also a two-window return to Upper Montagu Street. A semicircular arched doorway is located in the second bay from the right, with a panelled door featuring fluted jambs and head, and a plain fanlight above. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, set within flat, gauged arches. Stuccowork concludes with a plat band at first floor level. A parapet with coping runs along both frontages. A cast iron balcony with a Gothick pattern is attached to the Upper Montagu Street frontage at first floor level. Cast iron area railings, topped with urn finials, complete the exterior.
