Description

This is a pair of terraced houses located at 7 and 7A Wyndham Place in London, built around 1811 to 1823 as part of the development of Bryanston Square on the Portman Estate. The houses were designed by J.T. Parkinson. They are constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor, and have concealed slate roofs. The buildings are four storeys high, with a basement, and each front has two windows. Number 7A has a return front to Crawford Street, featuring a shop front and a single window to the upper floors. The houses share adjacent semicircular arched doorways with panelled doors set in pilaster jambs; the doors of number 7A are fluted with lion's head stops, and both have fanlights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars, set under flat, gauged arches. A plat band finishes the stucco work. A parapet has stone coping. Delicately patterned cast iron balconies are present on the first floor. Cast iron area railings with urn finials are also a feature. The return front of number 7A incorporates a plain Victorian shop front at number 37A Crawford Street, with a fascia flanked by brackets. Numbers 7 and 7A contribute to the formal setting of St. Mary's Church on Wyndham Place.
