Description
Nos. 42 and 43 Montagu Square are a pair of terraced townhouses dating from approximately 1810-11. They were designed by J.T. Parkinson as part of a larger development for the Portman Estate. The houses are built of stock brick with a channelled stucco finish to the ground floor; they have concealed slate roofs. They are five storeys high with basements. Each front is three windows wide. The left-hand doorway has a semicircular arch, a panelled door within fluted jambs, and a fanlight above. Ground floor windows are segmental bows, and the upper floors feature mid-19th century stucco canted bays. The canted bays extend over two storeys to No. 42 and only the first floor of No. 43, both finished with cornices and blocking courses. The windows are recessed sash windows with flat, gauged arches. A plat band marks the finish of the ground floor stucco work. Crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses are present at the roofline. There are continuous, cast iron balconies with a geometric patterned design on the first floor. Cast iron area railings with urn finials complete the exterior.
