Description

No. 44 Montagu Square is a terraced town house dating from around 1810-11, designed by J.T. Parkinson as part of his Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate. The building is constructed of stock brick with a stuccoed ground floor, and has a concealed slate roof. It is five storeys and has a basement. It has a three-window front. A semicircular arched doorway is on the left-hand side, featuring a panelled door within fluted jambs and a fanlight above. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, each set within a flat, gauged arch. A plat band defines the top of the stuccoed ground floor. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course top the building. A continuous cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern runs across the first floor. Cast iron area railings are present, finished with urn finials. The building is of group value, contributing to the character of the square.
