Description
No. 18 Montagu Square is a terraced town house dating from approximately 1810-1811. It was designed by J.T. Parkinson as part of his development of Montagu-Bryanston Square for the Portman Estate. The house is built of stock brick with a channelled stucco finish to the ground floor, and has a concealed slate roof. It is five storeys high, with a basement, and has a facade of three windows. A semicircular arched doorway is on the left-hand side, featuring a panelled door flanked by inset Greek Doric columns, a moulded doorhead, and a fanlight. The ground floor has two windows set within a segmental bow. Above this rises a two-storey stuccoed canted bay, added in the middle of the 19th century, with swagged panels at second floor level, a cornice and blocking course. The remaining windows are recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars on the top floor, all set within flat, gauged red brick arches. A plat band defines the top of the stucco work on the ground floor. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course tops the facade. A continuous cast iron balcony with a lattice pattern runs along the front of the first floor. Cast iron area railings with acorn finials are also present.
