Description
These are a group of terraced townhouses dating from around 1810-11. The front of number 47 was reconstructed in the early 1900s to match the original design. They were designed by J.T. Parkinson as part of the Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate. The houses are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have slate roofs which are largely hidden except for number 49. Numbers 47 and 48 are four storeys high, while number 49 is five storeys high, with dormered mansard roofs, all built on basements. Each house has a three-window wide front. Semicircular arched doorways are on the left side of number 47, with the remaining doorways to the right. These doorways feature inset Greek Doric columns, panelled doors, entablature doorheads, and fanlights. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, most with glazing bars, set within flat, gauged arches. A plat band marks the end of the stucco work on the ground floor, and a stucco sill band is present on the third floors, with an additional band on the fourth floor of number 49. Crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses top the buildings. Continuous, bracketed cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern are positioned on the first floor. Cast iron area railings with acorn finials complete the exterior.
