Description

A row of terraced town houses located at 7-12 Montagu Square, built around 1810-1811 by J.T. Parkinson as part of the Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate. The houses are of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor, and have slate roofs, largely hidden except at number 7. They are five storeys high, with basements, except for number 7, which has four storeys and a dormered attic within a mansard roof. Each house is three windows wide.

A semicircular arched entrance doorway is found on the left-hand side, with the exception of numbers 11 and 12 which are reversed. The panelled doors are set within pilaster jambs, and numbers 10 to 12 feature inset Greek Doric columns and fanlights; the fanlights of numbers 10 and 11 retain original radial patterned glazing. Two sash windows on the ground floor are set within a segmental bow, except at number 7, where mid-19th century stucco canted bays rise above the segmental bows through the first and second floors. These bays are finished with cornices and blocking courses, with mostly oblong or enriched panels above the first-floor cornices. Other windows are recessed sashes under flat, gauged arches; those of number 7 have stucco architraves. A plat band finishes off the ground-floor stuccowork. Crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses are present, and number 7 has a plain stone coped parapet. A continuous cast iron balcony with a lattice pattern runs along the first floor. Cast iron area railings with acorn finials are also present.
