Description

No. 12, Montagu Street is an end-of-terrace house dating from approximately 1810 to 1820, with later alterations. It was likely designed as part of J.T. Parkinson’s development for the Portman Estate, and is associated with Montagu Square. The building is constructed of stock brick with a rusticated stucco ground floor, and has a concealed slate roof. It is five storeys high with a basement. The house is two windows wide, with a four-window return to George Street. A square-headed doorway is located to the left, featuring a panelled door, a fanlight, and flanking pilasters supporting an entablature. The windows are recessed sash windows in stucco architraves; those on the first floor have cornices supported by consoles. Some windows to the return elevation are blind. A cast iron balcony with a geometric patterned design runs across the first floor. The building is topped by a stucco cornice and blocking course. Cast iron area railings with pineapple finials complete the exterior.
