Description
Terraced townhouses, dating to circa 1810-11, were constructed by J.T. Parkinson as part of his Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate. The buildings have undergone alterations in the mid-19th century and into the early 20th century. They are built of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor, and have slate roofs largely concealed except for number 25, which has a dormered mansard. The buildings are five storeys high, with basements, and have three-window wide fronts, except for a three-window bow front to number 24. Semicircular arched doorways are topped with fanlights. Ground floors feature two-window segmental bows; above these, numbers 25 and 26 have mid-19th century two-storey canted stucco bays, finished with cornices and a balustrade (number 25) or a blocking course (number 26). Number 24 has an early 20th century brown stone two-storey canted bay with Ionic columns on the first floor and a balustrade above the second floor. Recessed sash windows are found above the ground floor, set within flat gauged arches. A plat band finishes the stucco work on the ground floor. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course tops the buildings. Continuous cast iron balconies with a lattice pattern are present on the first floor. Cast iron area railings with acorn finials are also present. The interior of number 24 was remodelled around 1905 by Romaine-Walker in elegant Louis XVI and Adam revival styles, contemporary with the stone bay on the first and second floors.
