SOUTHWARK DULWICH VILLAGE (East side) Monument to John Willes, Dulwich Old Burial Ground

GV II

Stone tomb chest. Dated 1818. Brick plinth; stone base treated as vermiculated band; stylobate of 3 steps. Soanean in character, with Roman sepulchral motifs used in a highly idiosyncratic manner. Returns resemble a Roman stele, with a scallop shell inserted in a segmental pediment, a motif repeated on the long sides. Tapering corner pilasters have honeysuckle shoulders and inverted torches in low relief carving. Marked G on plan, located along south verge just north of Graham tomb. The burial ground, which was consecrated in 1616, was unusual in not being adjacent to any church or chapel. The monuments form a group with the C18 gates, walls and railings to Dulwich Old Burial Ground (qv).
