SOUTHWARK DULWICH VILLAGE (East side) Monument to Lieutenant-Colonel William Ranken, Dulwich Old Burial Ground

Stone tomb chest. Dated 1831. Stucco-faced plinth. Chest has angled corner pilasters terminating in shields. Enclosed by railings. Base has stone inscribed "Entrance to vault". Rosettes on corners of inscription panels. Ranken was a member of the East India Company. Marked H on plan, located along south verge just north of the Willes tomb. The burial ground, which was consecrated in 1616, was unusual in not being adjacent to any church or chapel. The monuments form a group with the C18 gates, walls and railings to Dulwich Old Burial Ground (qv).
