Monument to Richard Shawe, Dulwich Old Burial Ground

The monument to Richard Shawe is a stone tomb chest located in the Dulwich Old Burial Ground, dated 1818. It commemorates Richard Shawe, who died in 1816, and is signed by Day of Camberwell, possibly R Day, who was active from 1822 to 1851, or D Day, who completed work in 1822. The monument features a brick plinth and is designed in a style reminiscent of John Soane.

It consists of three upper stages, with the lowest stage displaying blocked segmental-arched openings on the sides, topped by a vermiculated band. The second stage is designed as a pedimented box, with floral scrolls filling the tympana and pilasters at the corners that incorporate Greek key motifs. The chest itself rests on a two-step stylobate and has tapering, fluted corner pilasters with capitals adorned with honeysuckle shoulders. Drapery is positioned between each corner pilaster, and the cap features a Greek meander pattern, embellished with a wreath in low relief.

The monument is marked as I on the plan and is situated along the southern edge of the burial ground, just north of the Ranken tomb. The burial ground itself was consecrated in 1616 and is notable for not being located next to any church or chapel. This monument is part of a group that includes the 18th-century gates, walls, and railings of the Dulwich Old Burial Ground.
