Monument To John Graham, Dulwich Old Burial Ground

The monument to John Graham is located in Dulwich Old Burial Ground and dates from 1796. It consists of a stone tomb chest set on a high and very plain stone base. The west side features a flat-arched vault entrance. The sarcophagus is adorned with corner balusters that have very mannered proportions. The simplicity of the base, along with some battering, gives it the appearance of an Egyptian pylon, which is further emphasized by the exceptionally bare treatment of the ashlar work. This monument is situated along the south verge, just north of the Kingsley and Burgess tombs. The burial ground itself, consecrated in 1616, is notable for not being located next to any church or chapel. This monument is part of a group that includes the 18th-century gates, walls, and railings of Dulwich Old Burial Ground.
