Description

The churchyard of Falkirk Old Parish Church features a notable small collection of monuments, primarily including:

a) A monument to Sir John de Graham, who was killed at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298. This monument was rebuilt by William Graham of Airth in 1773 and renewed with gothic ironwork, including an arched crown top, in 1860. It is a composite monument that includes a worn medieval effigy and other earlier fragments.

b) A slab commemorating Sir John Stewart of Bunkle, dating from the 13th century, with an early 19th-century superscription.

c) A slab for Rev. Robert Callander, who died in 1686, featuring armorial details.

d) A gib table tomb from 1636, which was also renewed in 1773.

e) The Murehead Monument, dating from 1723, has an arched recess with effigies, an elaborate cartouche flanked by twisted columns, a segmental pediment, cherubs, and an acorn finial above.

f) A monument for Robert Monro of Foulis from 1848, which includes a plinth and sarcophagus with railings.

g) The Men of Bute Memorial, a Celtic Cross erected in 1877 by the Marquess of Bute to honor those killed in 1298.

h) A burial vault located at the northwest corner, built of small rubble, featuring a door and a pediment with an obliterated inscription pane at the south end, and a piended slated roof at the north end.
