Description

The former Co-Operative Department Store, located at 1 Bank Street and Kirk Wynd, was designed by J G Callander in 1931. This tall, three-storey building features a rectangular plan in the Art Deco style, with a notable three-bay corner that is slightly advanced. The first floor is marked by engaged giant order columns, and the ground floor showcases a polished marble fascia, while the upper levels are finished in sandstone ashlar. Decorative bronze fascia panels are situated between the first and second floors, and there is a moulded and dentilled cill course at the first floor level.

The giant order columns are topped with boldly reeded capitals, and there is a corniced eaves course with a stepped blocking course above. The advanced three-bay corner and terminal bays include a deep stepped blocking course with decorative abstract sculptural mouldings at the centre of each bay. The windows on the first and second floors are framed by moulded and architraved surrounds, with a deep decorative bronze cill course between them; the centre bay of the corner block features a clock. The terminal bays and three corner bays have large fluted surrounds. Above the main entrance doorway in the centre bay of the corner block, there is a curved canopy.

Inside, the space is predominantly plain, having been adapted for retail and commercial office use. The building features large fixed pane glazing, with some sections having casement windows, all set in metal frames. The pitched roof is covered with grey slates, and the rainwater goods are concealed.
