Description

The Town Steeple in Falkirk was designed by David Hamilton and constructed between 1813 and 1814. This classical structure stands 140 feet high and consists of four stages. The building is made of ashlar stone, although it has been extensively repaired with stucco.

The first stage features a two-storey design with channelled stonework. The second stage includes inset Greek Doric angle columns and an arched opening with a balustraded apron and a pediment. The third stage houses a clock and has splayed angles with panelled pilasters. The fourth stage is a belfry, which is octagonal and supported by Ionic columns, topped with an octagonal stone spire.

Originally, there was a four-storey building from 1802 to 1803 that included a ground floor shop and cells above, but this adjoining structure has since been removed. The steeple was damaged in 1927 and underwent repairs, including the rebuilding of the upper 30 feet of the spire.
