Description
St George's Buildings, located at 151, 153, 155, and 157 Queen Street in Glasgow, is a classical office building designed by David Hamilton around 1834. This three-storey structure features an attic and is constructed of sharp ashlar masonry, presenting a symmetrical facade with seven bays.
The central entrance is flanked by broad panelled pilasters and topped with paired consoles at the cornice. The lintel displays the name "St George's Buildings," and the entrance consists of two-leaf panelled doors that have been retained. To the right, there is a modern shop front, while the left side retains earlier details, including panelled pilasters on either side, with a frieze and cornice above.
The first and second floors are divided by giant order Corinthian pilasters. The first-floor windows are taller, featuring pilastered jambs and a distinctive 12-pane glazing pattern, while the second-floor windows have a cill course and are architraved. Above the second floor, there is a fluted entablature adorned with scrolled acanthus panels as metopes, topped with a dentil cornice.
The three central bays of the attic break the attic cornice with a blocking course above, and round-arched windows are flanked by panelled pilasters. The outer bays feature windows with shouldered surrounds. The building is topped with a slate roof that includes a slate-hung dormer, and it has sash and case windows throughout.
