Description

There are four chest tombs located in the churchyard south of the tower of the Church of St Peter, dating from the 18th century and made of ashlar stone.

To the west are two tombs: the first is an unidentified double chest tomb from the mid-18th century, featuring two raised circular plaques on the north and south sides, and a single large oval plaque on the east and west. It has scroll-decorated angle piers and center piers on the north and south, along with a moulded base and capstone that is broken forward over the piers. The second tomb is also unidentified and dates from the mid-18th century, with a moulded base and cornice, and a fluted frieze that is broken forward over flush center and angle piers with incised fluting. It has two panels on each side with incised borders.

To the east are two more tombs: the first is the monument to John Wilkins, also from the mid-18th century, featuring a moulded base and cornice with a pulvinated frieze, fielded panelled piers, and two circular plaques on each side, along with round-headed end plaques. It includes an inscription for John Wilkins Senior, who died in 1824. The fourth tomb is the monument to John and Mercy Wilkins, dating from the mid-18th century, with a moulded base and cornice, a pulvinated frieze that is broken forward over foliate-scroll decorated piers, and two shield plaques on each side. The earliest decipherable date on this monument is 1788.
