Description

A group of five chest tombs from the 18th century is located west and southwest of the porch of the Church of St Peter. The tombs are made of ashlar stone and are described as follows:

The first, known as the Wastfield monument, dates from the mid-18th century and features intricate detailing, including large scroll-bordered plaques on the north side and a rectangular plaque on the south side flanked by scrolls. It has fielded panelled angle piers with rosettes at the center, a cartouche on the west end, and a shield plaque on the east end. The north inscription commemorates Robert Wastfield of Jackson's, with the earliest decipherable date being 1754.

The second tomb is the S. Matthews monument, from the early to mid-18th century, which has a moulded base and cornice that is broken forward over a floral-scroll decorated center and angle piers. It features two raised shield plaques on each side and round-headed end plaques. The south side inscriptions are dedicated to William, who died in 1766, and Sophia Matthews, who died in 1852.

The third is the J. Matthews monument, dating from the early 18th century. It has two shield plaques on each side and a finely carved scroll-decorated center and angle piers, along with a moulded base and cornice that has a pulvinated frieze, broken forward over the piers. The inscription honors John Matthews of Rawlings Farm, who died in 1876.

The fourth monument is unidentified and dates from the early to mid-18th century. It features two fielded plaques on each side, fielded end plaques, and a foliate decorated center and end piers, topped with a moulded capstone.

The fifth tomb is the S. Jefferys monument from the mid-18th century, which has two shield plaques on each side, fielded center and angle piers, a shield plaque on the east side, and a lozenge on the west. Its moulded base and cornice have a pulvinated frieze that is broken forward over the piers. The inscription commemorates Samuel Jefferys, who died in 1762.
