Description

A pair of semi-detached houses dating from the mid-19th century, located on Lyndhurst Way, Southwark. The houses are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with stucco dressings. They have a slate mansard roof, with fish scale detailing on the lower slope.

The houses are two storeys high, with gable-roofed dormers over a basement. Each house has two windows. All window and door openings are flat-arched, except where noted. The entrances are set back, accessed by steps, and have flush stone surrounds with simple chamfered cornices at the far ends of the pair. The entrance door to No. 31 retains its original design, with a decorative overlight. A similar cornice is found above all first-floor windows. The projecting ranges of the pair feature full-height, shallow rectangular bays with tripartite windows on the ground floor, consisting of sashes with original designs and cast-iron balconettes. First-floor and dormer windows have 2x2 sashes with margin lights. All upper-floor lintels have flush surrounds. The gable of the bay range terminates in a Dutch gable above the dormer. The eaves of the roof display exposed rafters. The entrance range windows are also within full-height, shallow rectangular bays, with an unusual flat-arched window to the dormer; the corners of this dormer are angled, and the gable roof has Gothic bargeboards. Stacks are located on the party wall. The interior was not inspected. Numbers 21-41 (odd) form a group.
