Description

A pair of semi-detached villas dating from the mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with a stucco facing to the basement and stucco dressings. They have slate roofs with gable ends. The architectural style is Italianate. Each house is two and three stories high, over a basement. There is one window in the recessed entrance range of one-window range to each unit. All windows have flat arches, unless otherwise stated.

Paired entrances are set under a wooden porch with a concave metal roof; original trellis and frets remain at number 39. A single window sits above each entrance, the lintels intersecting the eaves band. A lean-to roof covers the entrance range below the main roof of the pair. To the left and right of the entrance ranges is a three-storey gable-faced pavilion, projecting forward. Each pavilion has full-height corner pilasters. The gable eaves have short returns, forming a cornice block for each corner pilaster. The ground-floor and first-floor windows of each gabled pavilion are set into a two-storey stucco aedicule, featuring eared and shouldered architraves. There are round-arched windows to the gable. Windows have projecting sills, with cast-iron flower guards to the first-floor windows. An entrance to the rear yard is set within a single-story shed to the side. Brick stacks are located on the returns. The interior was not inspected. The properties form a group with numbers 21-41 (odd).
