Description
St James's House is a house that has been converted into a church house and school, built around 1835. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with stucco facing and a storey band on the ground floor. The roof features gables covered in slate. The building has an unusual cross plan, with two-storey arms that run perpendicular to the street and three-storey "transepts" that run parallel to the street.
The entrance is accessed by stairs from the Elm Grove elevation, which has two windows; the corners are rebated, and there is a one-window range on the return. The eaves project outwards. The transept wings feature segmental bays designed to resemble banded rustication, each with a tripartite window that retains its original sash design. The main face of each transept has a one-window range, and the gable roofs of the transepts also have projecting eaves. The rear arm mirrors the arrangement of the arm that contains the main entrance. There are stacks located at the peak of the front gable and at the centre ridge of the transepts. Several windows have 6x6 sashes that are of an original design. The interior has not been inspected.
