Description

Penshurst Place consists of three houses built between 1830 and 1850. They are constructed of brick in Flemish bond with stucco facing on the basement and stucco dressings, topped with slate roofs. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the exterior features two-storey recessed entrance ranges with three-storey gable facing insets, and a two-storey carriage house to the north of No. 72. Each house has two windows, while the carriage house has a one-window range. All openings are flat-arched.

The entrance is accessed by a flight of steps leading to a porch with a Tudor diaphragm arch that is simply chamfered and has Gothic coping on the parapet. To the right, there is a gable-facing range with a rectangular bay at the basement and ground floor. The ground-floor French doors are adorned with a pierced Gothic parapet that encloses a shallow porch. The bay features a simple glacis roof, except for No. 72, which has a 20th-century tile roof replacing the original. The French doors have casements of an original design, with one-pane transoms above each three-pane door, all featuring margin lights.

Quoins adorn the corners of the end units and the three-storey insets, which have gable kneelers and coping. The first-floor windows above the entrance are two-light with original 6x6 glazing and four-light transoms. The first-floor windows in the gable ranges are three-light with original design mullions and transoms. All windows on the first and second floors have flush architraves and chamfered jambs. The carriage house features late 19th-century or early 20th-century doors with an entrance to the left set in a four-centred Tudor arch, along with three-light windows above. Stacks are present on the party walls. The units are part of a group with Nos. 74-78 (even).
