Description
This is an irregular terrace of twenty houses, built between 1844 and 1845. Various builders are associated with different sections of the terrace: George Bassett Jnr is likely responsible for numbers 50-60, J Tickner for numbers 62 & 64, J Burrows for numbers 66 & 68, J James for numbers 70 & 72, R Radbourn for number 74, AR Rogers for number 76, J Toleman for number 78, R Batterbury for numbers 80-84, and JW Hudson for number 86. The construction is primarily yellow stock brick with rusticated stucco to the ground floors.
The houses are three storeys high, with basements, and some have penthouse additions (numbers 60, 72, 74, 80-84). Mansard roofs with dormers are found on numbers 52, 68, 76, 78, and 86. Each house originally had two windows. The doorways generally have square heads, with pilaster jambs supporting cornice heads, fanlights, and panelled doors. Numbers 70 & 72 have panelled jambs and console brackets that support a palmette-enriched frieze, while numbers 86 & 88 have similar console brackets supporting a frieze. Recessed sash windows are present throughout. Numbers 52-64, 68-72, and 78 feature margin glazing to the ground floors, while numbers 80-88 have tripartite ground floor sashes. Upper floors incorporate architraved sashes (except numbers 84-88). The first floors have console-bracketed cornices, except for numbers 50 and 52. Cast-iron balconies run along the front of the first-floor sashes. Number 84 features slightly projecting window bays, a parapet, and a brick dentil cornice. Numbers 50-56 have parapets, while numbers 58-82 and 86 & 88 have stucco cornices and blocking courses; the cornice at number 66 has been cut back. The interiors were not inspected during the listing process. Attached cast-iron railings are present to the areas and steps.
