Description
This description covers a pair of stone piers with lamp standards located at the east end of the Mornington Street Railway Bridge, constructed around 1900 for the London and North Western Railway. The piers are made of rusticated Portland stone, circular in shape, and sit on deep plinths topped with a cyma recta cornice. Each pier features metal lamp standards with fluted shafts and two arms on each side, although the lamp globes have been removed. Scrolled stone brackets on each pier rest on the parapets of the Mornington Street bridge.
Historically, the railway bridge over the London-Rugby line was widened at this crossing between Euston and Camden around 1900, and contract drawings from that time still exist. These piers form a group with the separately listed piers at the west end and have strong group value with the Grade II terrace on Mornington Terrace. It is important to note that the Mornington Street bridge and its attached walls are not included in this listing. The piers are noted for their Neo-Classical style and their role as an architectural feature marking this significant railway crossing.
