Description
These are a pair of stone piers with lamp standards at the west end of a railway bridge, dating from approximately 1900 and built for the London and North Western Railway. The railway bridge itself, which crosses the London-Rugby line between Euston and Camden, was widened around this time; contract drawings relating to the widening survive. The piers are constructed from rusticated Portland stone, having a circular plan, deep plinths, and a cyma recta cornice. At the top of each pier is a metal lamp standard featuring fluted shafts and a pair of arms on each side, though the lamp globes have since been removed. Each pier also has scrolled stone brackets that rest on the parapets of the Mornington Street bridge. These piers are listed for their Neo-Classical style, the use of Portland stone, the integral ornate metal lamp standards, and their strong group value, as they provide a prominent architectural announcement for this railway crossing. They form a group with the separately listed piers at the east end, and have group value with the listed buildings on Park Village East. The Mornington Street bridge and attached walls are not part of this listing.
