Description

Numbers 38 and 40 are a pair of houses dating from around 1840 in Camden. Number 38 is constructed of red brick with a rendered ground floor and parapet, topped by a slate roof and party wall stacks. It has a two-window front, three storeys and a basement. Upper floor windows have glazing bars within moulded architrave surrounds; those on the first floor have cast-iron balcony fronts. A panelled door is set within a moulded architrave doorcase, incorporating a rectangular top light. Number 40 is entirely rendered, with the ground floor channelled to suggest ashlar masonry and the upper floors scored to resemble ashlar. This house also has slate roofs and party wall stacks. A moulded cornice runs along the parapet. It has sash windows with glazing bars, and a panelled door is set back beneath a round-arched toplight. The interiors were not inspected. Both houses are accompanied by area railings with spear finials. The pair of houses are included on the list due to their well-preserved condition.
