Description
The Parkway Tunnel and Cutting is a railway tunnel and cutting built around 1836-1837. The entrance features stone jambs that support a 20th-century steel girder. The tunnel walls are made of stock brick and include closely spaced shallow buttresses topped with stone caps. These buttresses rise to form piers that support attractive cast-iron railings with an arcaded design. There are former segmental cast-iron struts that spanned the cutting between the piers, which have been cut back to their base plates. A similar revetment is located to the north-east of the tunnel. Additionally, railings and piers were added to the north-west of the tunnel around 1900-1906 to match the earlier work when the New Line was constructed.
