Description

Gloucester Gate Bridge is a bridge that was formerly over the Cumberland Basin arm of Regent's Canal, which is now dry. It features a dedication stone at the north-west end dated 11 August 1877. The bridge was designed by engineer William Booth Scott for the Vestry of St Pancras, with contractors Kirk and Randall. It is constructed of red and purple brick with red sandstone.

The central parapets are made of cast iron, supported on cast-iron beams over the tunnel entrance, which has modillion brackets. The parapets are designed with pierced patterns and central bosses featuring stylised flowers, while the abutments flanking the now-sealed tunnel entrance are topped with elaborate bronze lamp standards shaped like candelabra, although the south-west standard is missing. These lamp standards repeat a floral motif with foliage and are inscribed "Gardner/Strand" and signed "Wm. Booth Scott."

At the north-east end, there is an inset bronze bas relief plaque depicting the martyrdom of St Pancras by CE Fucigna, which was presented by William Thornton. Attached to both northern ends are cast-iron railings with ball and spike finials, leading to sandstone piers topped with foliated features. The north and south abutments are under sandstone parapets and made of red brick with recessed panels that contain rubbed brick roundels.

Historically, the Cumberland Basin arm was constructed between 1813 and 1816, running to the west of Regent's Park and Albany Street, and it ended in a basin at Cumberland Market. This basin was filled in during 1942-1943.
