Description

A pair of semi-detached houses, Gloucester Lodge (number 12) and Gloucester House (number 14), were built between 1827 and 1828 by James Burton, with later wings added in 1836 by J.B. Papworth. The houses are constructed of stucco and feature an irregular facade with two and three storeys, as well as a semi-basement. The central section has an Ionic, tetrastyle in antis portico with three-quarter engaged columns rising through the ground and first floors to support the entablature. The windows are recessed sash windows, those within the portico have blind boxes. Flanking the central portico are single-window recessed links leading to two-window sections; one has a parapet and the other a distyle-in-antis portico with columns rising through the ground and first floors to support a balustraded entablature, creating a balcony to the recessed attic storey which has three architraved windows (the outer ones are blind) and an arcaded balustraded parapet. To the rear, a four-window return faces Gloucester Gate. The entrance to number 14 is through a prostyle Greek Doric portico in antis, with an architraved doorway and panelled doors. Pilasters support an entablature at the attic storey level and continue upward to carry a cornice with an arcaded (mostly) parapet. The windows are architraved recessed sashes. The interiors have not been inspected. A stone-capped boundary wall with pilaster strips is attached to the gate.
