Description

This is an irregular terrace of 27 houses, built in 1845 under the direction of surveyor George Bassett Jnr. The houses are constructed from yellow stock brick with rusticated stucco ground floors. Nos. 77, 87, 93 and 95 have slate mansard roofs with attic dormers, with No. 97 being the exception. Nos. 63, 75 and 83 feature penthouses, while Nos. 93 and 95 project slightly.

The terrace is three storeys high and includes basements. Each house has two windows. The doorways are square-headed; some include pilaster jambs supporting cornice heads, accompanied by fanlights and panelled doors. Nos. 93, 95 and 97 have stucco doorcases with pilasters supporting an entablature. The houses at Nos. 45-61, 65, 67, 73, 77 and 79 have margin glazing to the ground floor windows, while Nos. 81-97 have tripartite ground floor sashes. Nos. 93, 95 and 97 feature consoles on mullions. Upper floor windows are architraved, and those on the first floor have console-bracketed cornices and cast-iron balconies. A stucco cornice and blocking course runs along the terrace, except at No. 53, which has a brick parapet.

The interiors were not inspected.

Attached cast-iron railings flank the entrance steps, and geometrical railings are found to the areas. Nos. 93, 95 and 97 feature attached cast-iron railings with foliated finials to the areas.

The terrace forms a cohesive group with the rest of Albert Street, representing development of the 1840s. No. 97 Albert Street was individually listed on 14 January 1994.
