Description
Nos 1 to 5 College Street is an 18th-century red brick building, which may have been part of an earlier structure, and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring a total of 12 windows (8 in the main block and 4 in an extension on the east end). Most of the windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set in flush cased frames. Three first-storey windows have shaped brick heads, while one window is blocked. A raised brick band separates the storeys. The ground storey has seen significant changes during the 19th and 20th centuries. The central section, which has four windows, includes a moulded brick entrance with pilasters, a dentilled cornice, and panels, but has been bricked up with 20th-century windows added. At the west end, there is a wooden doorcase with panelled reveals, panelled pilasters, and a pediment supported by carved brackets. The roofs are slate, featuring two 19th-century gabled dormers and a wooden modillion eaves cornice. This building is part of a group that includes the Church of St Peter and the Gateway to Wolsey's College of St Mary.
