Description
The Church of St Peter is a 14th and 15th century building constructed from flint and stone, featuring stone dressings. It has a notable 15th century knapped flint tower, which stands approximately 100 feet high and is supported by corner buttresses. The church underwent significant restoration in the late 19th century, and the upper stage of the tower was rebuilt in the 20th century. Inside, there is a remarkable 12th century black Tournai marble font adorned with animal carvings, as well as an early 17th century brass memorial to John Knapp, described as a 'Merchant and portman of this towne of Ipswich', dated 1604. This church is located next to the priory of SS Peter and Paul, which was suppressed in 1527 and subsequently given to Cardinal Wolsey, who established his own college on the site. The Church of St Peter, along with the Gateway to Wolsey's College of St Mary and Nos 1 to 5 (odd) and No 4, form a cohesive group.
