Description
The Gateway to Wolsey's College of St Mary is a historic brick structure located next to St Peter's Church Yard. It is the only remnant of the college founded by Cardinal Wolsey for Secular Canons in 1528, which was suppressed in 1530. The gateway features a 4-centred moulded brick archway with a square hood moulding, topped with the weathered stone arms of Henry VIII set within a moulded brick panel. This panel is flanked by niches that have cusped brick arches. Above the archway, there is a band of recessed panels decorated with quatrefoil moulding. The gateway is framed by two octagonal piers that rise in three stages. Although this was not the main entrance, it likely provided access to a quadrangle. To the west of the gateway, there is a small section of the boundary wall that extends north, marking the edge of St Peter's Churchyard.
