Description
This milestone, located 50 meters north of Griggs Bridge in Braughing village, dates from around 1742 and was created for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The original inscription has been covered by an iron lettered plate, possibly designed by McAdam around 1804. The milestone is made of Portland stone and features a square pillar approximately one meter high, facing east. It has a rounded top and a large front plate with a raised edge bead and a segmental curved top. The inscription on the plate reads 'LONDON/28/WARE/7/BARKWAY/7' in letters that decrease in size, with the first and last words raised in segmental arcs.
