Description

Milestone located on Barkway Road, Anstey, dating from around 1742 for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The front is covered by an iron lettered plate added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. It is made of white freestone and features a cast iron plate. The milestone is a rectangular stone pillar facing west, measuring approximately 400 mm by 350 mm and standing 750 mm high. It has a large front plate with a rounded top when viewed from the front. The plate has a segmental top with a raised edge bead and an inscription that reads 'LONDON/33/WARE/12/BARKWAY/2', with the first and last names raised in segmental arcs.
